Cleaning and caring for your velvet furniture
Velvet can look different from various angles and lighting – this is a characteristic of the material and not a fault.
To get the most out of your velvet sofa or accessories, we recommend incorporating it into your cleaning routine.
– Position your upholstered furniture away from heat and sunlight which can cause colour fading and surface degradation
– Dust and particles can settle on velvet furniture relatively quickly. Lightly dust the furniture with a soft brush or a lint roller once a week or as needed to remove surface dust and dirt
– Regularly vacuum velvet furniture. Use a soft brush attachment on your vacuum cleaner to gently remove dust and debris from the velvet upholstery. Aim to vacuum your velvet furniture at least once a month or more frequently if you have pets or allergies
– If you don’t have an attachment, place a pair of tights over the nozzle – this will work just as well. When vacuuming or brushing, make sure you are doing so in the direction of the pile
– Since velvet has a higher pile, it has the tendency to compress when under pressure for long periods of time. Steaming velvet fabric is a great way to keep it clean and avoid velvet compression. To remove compression, simply steam the creases out with a steamer or the steam setting on your iron, and gently brush in the opposite direction of the pile to release the wrinkles. Be sure your steamer is set on low to avoid damaging the fabric
– If you spill something on your velvet sofa or cushion, DO NOT attempt to clean it with water or rub it with a cloth. Liquids can stain velvet easily and rubbing may force the spill deeper into the fibres. Simply blot the surface with a dry, highly absorbent cloth (e.g. microfibre cloth), taking care to avoid rubbing or putting pressure on the fabric
– Once you’ve blotted the surface, simply air dry the fabric or use a hairdryer without heat at a safe distance to lightly dry the area
– Do not use bleaches or household cleaning products which can damage the dyes and surface of the upholstery
– Use a bobble remover to even out any surface areas that have bobbles. It is common for fabric sofa cushions to have bobbles from everyday use - this is not a defect nor does it affect the durability of the furniture
– Be careful with sharp objects such as studs, buckles, jewellery, heels, toys or a pet's claws on your upholstered furniture as they can cause scratches or tears
– If you notice a snag, don't pull it - instead, trim it off with scissors
– Regularly tighten any bolts to avoid damage and maintain stability and strength
– Do not drag your furniture when moving, instead lift and place it carefully
– Always follow the care instructions that came with your furniture
